Big Changes to Pool Pump Laws Coming in 2021, Are You Prepared?
On July 19, 2021, the U.S. Department of Energy will roll out changes in Florida’s pool pump manufacturing and selling of single speed pumps. Single speed pumps will be eventually phased out and replaced with variable speed pool pumps.
This is a major move to advance energy efficiency in the pool pump industry. A pool’s pump is typically on throughout the entire day thus causing it to be the second largest consumer of energy on a property. It’s important to know not all single speed pumps will being going away on in ground pools, but a large portion will because manufacturers won’t be able to meet the new requirements with a single speed pump.
New way to measure pump power
Pool pump have been historically rated by horsepower. However, now pumps will be rated by “weighted energy factor,” or more commonly called WEF.
When this rolls out pumps will be given a WEF rating, and if their WEF number is not high enough they cannot be sold. Most single speed pumps will not reach the required number enforced by the DOE to be sold.
Going Green
The underlying reason for these changes is because pool pumps take up so much energy. Variable speed pumps are currently the best way to conserve energy for not only your property, but also for the environment!
